This choice, based on neutral atom technology, is the result of a joint Franco-German PPI procedure, won by French start-up PASQAL.

HPCQS, the four-year pan-European hybrid HPC/quantum pilot project, aims to develop, deploy and coordinate a federated European cloud-based infrastructure, tightly integrating two quantum computers, each controlling over 100 qubits (quantum bits) in GENCI’s Level 0 Joliot-Curie HPC systems, operated at CEA/TGCC, and the JUWELS modular supercomputer at the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC). Supported by the European Joint Undertaking for High-Performance Computing (EuroHPC JU) and six European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain), and managed by the JSC, HPCQS started in December 2021.
The seamless integration of quantum hardware with classical computing resources, creating a hybrid system, is an essential step towards harnessing the power of quantum computers for the first practical applications. HPCQS will also create and deliver a comprehensive, hardware-agnostic, European-made programming environment for quantum computing and hybrid quantum HPC applications designed for end-users.

To achieve these objectives, GENCI and Forschungszentrum Jülich – with the support of EuroHPC JU – have launched a joint PPI (Public Procurement of Innovative Solutions) procedure to acquire two quantum simulators capable of controlling at least 100 qubits. This PPI led to the selection of the Fresnel analog quantum simulator supplied by PASQAL, a French start-up. It is based on the technology of neutral atoms arranged in 2D/3D arrays of optical tweezers and interacting in their Rydberg states. Each Fresnel will be coupled to a Tier-0 system and serve as a quantum gas pedal for specific workloads in the fields of optimization, quantum chemistry and machine learning.

The two Fresnel quantum simulators will be installed in the second half of 2023 at CEA/TGCC and FZJ/JSC. In the meantime, PASQAL will provide early remote access to its in-house Fresnel system to advance HPCQS activities towards deployment of a complete hybrid software stack comprising cloud access, hybrid workload resource management, tools and libraries, including benchmarking and performance certification/analysis. Involving users in co-design will lead to prototype applications in machine learning and scientific simulations, with quantum algorithms for solving differential equations, material simulations, graph machine learning and optimization problems.

Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, said: “The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is delighted to support its first quantum computing initiative, and looks forward to seeing the new quantum simulators in action. Access to quantum computing and harnessing the capabilities of this resource in conjunction with our existing classical HPC infrastructure will enable European research and industry to develop new and innovative applications and technological solutions.
“GENCI and CEA are extremely pleased with the selection of PASQAL’s Fresnel quantum simulator to bring HPCQS to life. This acquisition, made as part of France’s quantum strategy and the European HPCQS project, is a historic step for France and Europe in terms of assessing the quantum advantage. Coupled with our Joliot Curie supercomputer at the TGCC, their unique 100+ qubit technology based on cold atoms will enable European researchers to concretely assess the potential of quantum computing on their scientific and industrial workloads” declared together Philippe Lavocat, CEO of GENCI, and Jacques-Charles Lafoucrière, HQI, Program Director at CEA.

HPCQS is the ideal continuation of the plans and activities for hybrid quantum HPC, which we started in Germany with JUNIQ, on a European level with our excellent partners,” explains Professor Thomas Lippert of JSC. “With HPCQS, we are the first in the world to realize the deep integration between HPC and quantum computing on the basis of a modular supercomputer, and we are bringing Europe to the forefront of research with this innovative technology.

“The PASQAL team is very honored that our neutral atom quantum computers have been selected by the HPCQS alliance to form the core of Europe’s first hybrid (quantum-classical) HPC infrastructure. We’re proud to be part of a collaboration with such great partners, and to help position the European HPC community at the forefront of the quantum revolution. The role that PASQAL can play for the HPCQS alliance could not have been achieved without the strong support of the French public authorities and their commitment to achieving excellence in quantum technologies, as formulated in the French national quantum plan. That’s why today, it’s not just a question of selecting the PASQAL quantum computers, but of reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy in the field of quantum technologies and HPC. We’re building tomorrow’s HPC infrastructure, supplied by European quantum and HPC champions”, said Georges-Olivier Reymond, Managing Director of PASQAL.

            About HPCQS

HPCQS is an open, scalable infrastructure that aims to expand in the future by including a diversity of quantum computing platforms at different levels of technological maturity, and enabling the integration of other European quantum nodes. Following on from the Jülich Unified Infrastructure for Quantum Computing (JUNIQ), the HPCQS infrastructure represents a second step towards a European Quantum Computing and Simulation Infrastructure (EuroQCS), as advocated in the Strategic Research Agenda of the European Flagship Program on Quantum Computing.

        [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,1_4,1_4,1_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” animation_style=”fade” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.hqi.fr/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/cea.jpg” alt=”INRIA” title_text=”cea” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.23.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”|118px||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.hqi.fr/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/genci.jpg” alt=”GENCI” title_text=”genci” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.hqi.fr/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pasqal-2.jpg” alt=”pasqal” title_text=”pasqal” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.hqi.fr/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/france-2030.jpg” alt=”France 2030″ title_text=”france-2030″ align=”center” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” border_width_top=”1px” border_color_top=”#053062″ border_width_bottom=”1px” border_color_bottom=”#053062″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

PRESS CONTACTS

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_font_size_tablet=”” text_font_size_phone=”18px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]

HQI
Nicolas Belot
contact@hqi.fr – +33 (7) 60 99 95 10

Secrétariat général pour l’investissement
presse.sgpi@pm.gouv.fr – 01 42 75 64 58

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Capable of controlling at least 100 qubits, the Fresnel analog quantum computer has been chosen as part of the pan-European HPCQS project.
